Brutal cold and lingering ice continued to threaten much of Arkansas on Sunday, refreezing roadways and prompting widespread government closures for Monday as wind chills dipped well below zero in northern parts of the state.

An Extreme Cold Warning remained in effect through noon Tuesday for much of Arkansas, according to the National Weather Service in Little Rock. Forecasters said wind chills could plunge as low as 15 below zero, creating dangerous conditions in which frostbite can develop on exposed skin within minutes.

The bitter temperatures complicated road-clearing efforts statewide. While highway crews worked around the clock to keep major routes passable, melting snow and ice refroze overnight, leaving bridges, overpasses, and rural secondary roads especially slick, the Arkansas Department of Transportation said. Officials urged motorists to avoid unnecessary travel.

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders ordered all state office buildings closed Monday, except for critical operations, citing hazardous travel conditions. County and city offices across north-central and northeast Arkansas also announced closures or limited schedules.

In Independence County, Judge Kevin Jeffery said county offices will be closed Monday and likely Tuesday. Trash service will be suspended, though road department crews will continue working.

Emergency officials warned the prolonged freeze could cause water pipes to burst and urged residents to take precautions, including letting faucets drip, insulating pipes, and keeping pets indoors. Residents were also encouraged to dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and check on elderly neighbors.

Officials cautioned against using grills or generators indoors because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and said space heaters should only be used according to manufacturer instructions.

Road conditions are available at iDriveArkansas.com or through the state’s mobile app.
