One year after a devastating EF3 tornado tested its resolve, the small community of Cave City is now vying for the title of the “Strongest Town” in North America.
The town of 1,900 residents was announced this week as one of the top 16 finalists in the 10th annual Strongest Town Contest. Hosted by the nonprofit organization Strong Towns, the international competition spotlights communities that prioritize financial resilience, incremental growth, and citizen-led improvement rather than rapid, debt-fueled expansion.
Cave City is one of two Arkansas municipalities to make the bracket this year, alongside Fairfield Bay.
“We are proud to see that Cave City and Fairfield Bay are both on this top-list, representing our state,” said Cave City Mayor Jonas Anderson. “We hope to see a groundswell of voting support for our places, which is good for our state, too.”
The nomination for Cave City highlights a “resilient spirit” following the March 2025 tornado. According to the town’s official entry, the recovery effort was driven by local neighbors and existing community networks rather than a reliance on outside experts or massive cash infusions.
In recent years, the community has seen the revival of its Chamber of Commerce and achieved designation as a “Main Street” community, a program aimed at preserving historic downtown districts and bolstering local economies.
The contest is structured as a four-round, bracket-style tournament determined by public internal voting. The initial “Seeding Showcase” round runs through March 13, with the top eight vote-getters advancing to the “Elite Eight.”
Subsequent rounds include the “Final Four” starting March 23 and the “Championship” beginning March 30. The winner, to be announced in early April, will receive a trophy and a custom-produced mini-documentary showcasing the town’s progress to a national audience.
Residents and supporters can cast one vote per round at the contest website, www.strongesttown.com.
