Little Rock television station KATV traveled to Sharp County this week to assess the recovery of Cave City one year after an EF-3 tornado caused widespread destruction across the community.

The tornado was part of an outbreak that killed three people in neighboring Independence County. No fatalities were reported in Cave City, though the storm destroyed 25 homes and damaged or demolished 20 businesses, including the town’s only grocery store, a pharmacy, a funeral home, and a dentist’s office.

KATV’s report found recovery progressing across the community. Hometown Market, the town’s only grocery store, has reopened following repairs. Walling Drug, whose original location was destroyed, is nearing completion of a new permanent facility. Some homeowners have completed rebuilding; others remain in progress.

Mayor Jonas Anderson credited support from faith-based organizations, state agencies, and neighboring communities, alongside the efforts of Cave City residents, for the pace of recovery. Sharp County Sheriff Shane Russell and Public Works Director Brian Barnett also spoke with KATV about the night of the storm and its aftermath.

Federal disaster assistance was initially denied but later approved following appeals from the governor, providing FEMA funding to affected families.

Cave City is also now in the second round of voting for the title of the “Strongest Town” in North America. Click here for more info on the contest and how to vote.
