Obituary: James Luther Liles

James Luther Liles, 97, of Cave City, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, in Newport, Arkansas.

He was born on August 21, 1928, in Charlotte, Arkansas, to Samuel and Ethel (Wilson) Liles. James lived a long and meaningful life marked by devotion to his family, his country, and the simple pleasures he cherished most. He carried with him a deep appreciation for his roots and often enjoyed reflecting on the memories of his childhood and the many experiences that shaped his life.

James was a very proud Army veteran who served in the 5th Regimental Combat Unit during the Korean War. His service to his country was a source of great pride throughout his life, and he spoke with honor about his time in the military. Those who knew him will remember his strong spirit, his steady presence, and the respect he showed for the life he had lived and the people he loved.

He especially enjoyed fishing and camping, and he found happiness in the outdoors and in the company of others. James was also an amazing storyteller, and he had a special gift for bringing memories to life with warmth, humor, and detail. He absolutely loved to relive his childhood and his time in service, sharing those stories with family and friends who treasured hearing them. His conversations were often filled with wisdom, laughter, and the kind of recollections that made his life story unforgettable.

James is survived by one son, Kevin and Melissa of Charlotte; one daughter, Teresa Roberson and Jerry of Cave City; one sister, Ruby Leech of Batesville; one grandchild whom he and his wife helped to raise, Adam Liles; and six other grandchildren, Jerry Roberson and Sandy, Michael Liles, Eric Liles, Jeff Langston and Courtney, Amber Cook and Darin, and Trevor Langston, and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 62 years, Jeanette, and four brothers. The love he shared with his family remained a defining part of his life, and his memory will continue to be held close by all who knew him.

James Luther Liles will be remembered with love and gratitude for his service, his storytelling, his love of family, and the many memories he created over nearly a century of life. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.

Pallbearers will be Mike Shaw, Tony Anderson, Steven Lange, Scott Hayes, Ryan Hayes, and Shaun McGaha.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 6, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Roller-Crouch Funeral Home in Batesville, with John Sanders and Adam Liles officiating. Burial will follow at Shamrock Cemetery in Charlotte.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
