Newly appointed Batesville School District Superintendent David Campbell is outlining a vision to restore community trust, move the district forward, and strengthen academic and student support following a period of challenges.
Campbell, who served as interim superintendent beginning in late February before taking the job permanently, addressed district goals and recent initiatives during a recent local broadcast appearance (scroll down to listen to the full interview). A 1984 graduate of Batesville High School, Campbell said he is in his 38th year in education and has spent 27 years with the Batesville School District.
Rebuilding community trust stands at the top of Campbell’s priorities. He emphasized that establishing trust requires time, collaboration, teamwork, and openness.
“You have to learn from the past, but you can’t just focus on the past,” Campbell said, adding that his administration plans to prioritize listening to teachers and residents, being open about its actions, owning up to mistakes, and celebrating district achievements.
To support the transition, Campbell introduced a restructured leadership team. The team includes Jamie McMinn as director of special programs, overseeing special education; Kyle Downs as director of operations; and Rachel Horn, who serves as assistant superintendent and curriculum director.
Over the summer, the district provided 115,000 free meals through its summer meal program. Building on that initiative, Campbell said the district is providing free breakfast and lunch to all students throughout the school year, regardless of economic situation. The district is also providing school supplies to all students at no cost, eliminating supply fees and reducing potential financial barriers for families.
On the academic front, the district implemented “KinderBoost,” a summer preparation program designed to help incoming students become familiar with classroom routines and prepare for kindergarten. The district also held an intensive summer camp for third graders who had not met the performance level required under state standards. Campbell said the program produced “unbelievable results” and will continue throughout the school year, with the hope that no third graders will have to be retained.
At the secondary level, Campbell highlighted the district’s continued focus on Advanced Placement, career pathways, and college and career experiences. Batesville seniors receive between $4 million and $5 million annually in scholarships, with Campbell noting that local community members help supplement those awards.
Campbell encouraged residents to support the district by volunteering through local parent-teacher organizations, secondary parent organizations, athletic booster clubs, and band boosters.
