In a first-of-its-kind mission, Rep. Rick Crawford of Arkansas led a bipartisan U.S. delegation to Honduras on Nov. 30 to observe the country’s presidential election and reinforce support for democratic processes in the region.
Crawford, who chairs the House Intelligence Committee, was joined by three other committee chairs and lawmakers from both parties. The delegation visited polling sites in Tegucigalpa and Comayagua as accredited election observers and met with officials from the Organization of American States to review preparations and safeguards ahead of the vote.
Members said voters welcomed their presence and expressed support for a transparent election process. The group also met with U.S. Embassy staff, who briefed them on competition with China and Russia in Central America and on ongoing security cooperation with Honduras.
During a stop at Soto Cano Air Base, lawmakers spoke with U.S. service members and received an update on Joint Task Force–Bravo’s regional mission.
Crawford said Hondurans demonstrated a strong commitment to democracy and urged patience as election results are verified, adding that the OAS mission must be allowed to “do its job” to ensure confidence in the outcome.
