A Friday evening crash on Highway 18 near Lake City left two people dead, including a child, and sent five others to hospitals across three states, Arkansas State Police said.
According to a preliminary state police crash report, the collision occurred at 6:33 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Lake City Bridge, Jonesboro television station KAIT reported. Troopers said a 2013 Ford driven eastbound by Brad King of Manila crossed the center lane and struck a westbound 2023 Volkswagen driven by Kennedy Riggs of Blytheville.
A 2014 Toyota then struck the Volkswagen in a secondary impact, according to the report.
King was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died, said Arkansas State Police Communications Director Cindy Murphy. A minor riding in the Volkswagen also was killed in the crash.
Riggs and four other minors were injured and taken to hospitals in Jonesboro, Memphis and Little Rock, Murphy said. The driver of the Toyota was not injured and had no passengers.
Lake City Mayor Cameron Tate initially reported the crash as a head-on collision and said four people had died, but state police confirmed Sunday that there were two fatalities.
