Obituary: Joyce M. Stoner

Joyce M. Stoner, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on Sunday, January 18, in Newport at the age of 75. Born on August 11, 1950, to George Butler and Mathie Martha (Holmes) Smith, Joyce lived a life rooted in faith, service, and love.

From an early age, Joyce committed her life to Christ, joining Mt. Zion Baptist Church before later moving her membership to First Baptist Church in Newport. There, her faith was evident through her dedication as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the choir, and an active participant in the Mission Ladies. She served her church with a joyful heart and a willing spirit, always ready to help others.

Joyce was a hardworking and devoted employee, retiring from American Lantern after 23 years of faithful service. Outside of work, she found her greatest joy in caring for her family. She loved cooking meals that brought everyone together, decorating for every season, celebrating holidays, and creating treasured memories on family vacations.  She loved shopping and buying from QVC.

Joyce will be remembered for her kindness, her strong faith, and her deep love for family. Her legacy of love and service will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.

Mrs. Stoner was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 38 years, Jim Stoner; her brother, Billy Joe Smith; her sisters, Lena Alcorn and Martha Ann Smith.

She is survived by her children: Edward D. Murry of Beaverton Oregon, Justin P. Stoner, Sr. and wife Tara of Jonesboro, Teresia M. Duncan of Jonesboro, six grandchildren: Kayla Duncan, Marissa Murry, Jyshyra Stoner, Justice Stoner, Justin P. Stoner, Jr., and Jaxon Stoner, five great grandchildren: Jordan Stoner, Zimri Duncan, Chance Stoner, Kehlani Murry, and Saurn Murry, five brothers: Jessie Smith (Jackie) of Newport, Eddie Smith, Charles Smith, Nathaniel Smith, and Lonnie Smith all of Newport.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 Saturday, January 24, 2026, at the First Baptist Church with visitation from 1:00 till service. Burial will follow in Watson Cemetery.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be: Kevin Smith, Shawn Alcorn, Tyrone Calamese, Alvin Alcorn, DeShawn Smith, and Stevie Alcorn. Honorary pallbearers will be Justin Stoner Jr., Jordan Stoner, Chance Stoner, Jaxon Stoner, and the Deacons of the First Baptist Church: Bobby Ross, Alfonso Dean, Donny Davis, and Charles Watson.
