An Independence County specialty chemical maker is reviving its largest revenue segment after a costly six-month shutdown.

FutureFuel Corp. (NYSE: FF) has begun a gradual restart of biofuel production following months of regulatory uncertainty, the company announced Monday alongside fourth-quarter results, according to Arkansas Business. The halt weighed heavily on finances: FutureFuel swung to a $12 million loss in the quarter, compared with $2.8 million in income a year earlier, as revenue plunged 68% to $19.8 million.

Production resumed after President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” resolved questions surrounding the federal 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit.

Despite renewed optimism about biofuels in 2026, FutureFuel is diversifying — opening a new methacrylate chemical plant and advancing production upgrades. The company is also consolidating operations in Batesville after announcing plans to close its Clayton, Mo., headquarters.
