A dispute over property boundaries turned violent Monday night, leaving two men hospitalized following an exchange of gunfire in the Bayhill Place area, according to the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff John Montgomery said deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:05 p.m. after neighbors reported hearing shouting followed by several gunshots. While units were en route, a second emergency call confirmed that a person had been shot.

Upon arrival, deputies located a man outside a residence suffering from a gunshot wound. After receiving on-site first aid, the man was transported by a Baxter Health ambulance to the hospital for treatment.

During the preliminary investigation, authorities learned that a second participant in the altercation had also been struck by gunfire. That individual had already arrived at Baxter Health via private vehicle before deputies reached the scene.

Investigators determined that the two men — ages 21 and 50 — had engaged in a mutual exchange of gunfire. The sheriff’s office confirmed that the root of the altercation was a disagreement over a property boundary.

“Both firearms were recovered at the scene and taken into evidence,” Montgomery said in a statement released Tuesday morning.

The names of the two men and their current medical conditions have not been released. The investigation remains active, and the findings will be submitted to the prosecuting attorney’s office to determine if criminal charges will be filed.
