The nation’s musical heritage will be celebrated this Sunday at Lyon College.
The Batesville Symphony League will present the Delta Symphony Orchestra in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 12, in Sloan Auditorium of the Brown Fine Arts Building at Lyon College, 2300 Highland Rd., Batesville.
A pre-concert lecture will begin at 1:15 p.m. The performance, titled “America 250: A Musical Journey,” celebrates the rich traditions of American music and history. Admission is free and open to the public.
The concert program features a dynamic selection of works, including John Williams’ “Liberty Fanfare,” Aaron Copland’s “Variations on a Shaker Melody” from Appalachian Spring, and John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Audiences will also enjoy George Gershwin’s “Someone to Watch Over Me” and the overture to Candide by Leonard Bernstein.
The concert opens with “The Star-Spangled Banner,” arranged by Floyd Werle, and continues with additional patriotic favorites such as Morton Gould’s “American Salute” and Bob Lowden’s “Armed Forces Salute.”
The performance is sponsored by First Community Bank and Lyon College. Support for the Delta Symphony Orchestra is provided in part by the Arkansas Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
