Obituary: Glenda Frances (Stites) Van Winkle

Glenda Frances (Stites) Van Winkle passed from this life at her residence in Harding Place, Searcy, Arkansas on June 1, 2023, at the age of 88. She was born on September 17, 1934, to Elmer and Mattie (Chisam) Stites in Newport, Arkansas. Her dad said he wanted a boy, so he called her “Jack” and she came to be affectionately called Jack by the family and close friends. She attended school at Olyphant and Hindman, graduating from Oil Trough High School in 1952. In December of that year, she married J.D. Van Winkle, and they were married for 52 years until his death.

She lived much of her life in the Olyphant and Hindman communities and worked in Newport. In 1997 Glenda retired from the Arkansas State Police where she was employed as secretary for Troop B for 19 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and siblings; Hershel Stites, Evelyn Stewart, Dawn Slayter, Jakie Stites, an infant brother and son-in-law, Garry Koettel.  She is survived by her daughters; Audrey Gramling (Mike) of Newcastle, Oklahoma, Vivian Koettel of North Little Rock, Arkansas, and Annette Woods (Dana) of Mountain View, Arkansas. Seven grandchildren: Jay Gramling (Emily) of Edmond, OK, Garrett Koettel (Grace) of Fayetteville, AR, Laura Scogin (Lance) of Moore, OK, Grant Koettel (Audrey) of Fayetteville, AR, Brittney Woods of Mountain View, AR, Jeffrey Gramling (Cecilia) of Edmond, OK, and Hunter Woods of Bentonville, AR. 10 great-grandchildren: Carter Gramling, Olivia Gramling, Sadie Scogin, Grayson Miller, Amelia Koettel, Max Scogin, Gunnar Koettel, Collins Gramling, Evelyn Gramling, and Saylor Koettel.  Also, three sisters-in-law, Jane Stites of Olyphant, AR, Pat Hemminger of Rock Falls, IL, and Elizabeth McDougal of Grand Rapids, MI.

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Service will be at 2:00 on Monday, June 5, 2023, at Dillinger Funeral Home Chapel.  Visitation will be from 1:00 until Service time.  Interment will be at Hindman Cemetery.
