More information from the Arkansas State Police has been released on a fatal accident in Independence County earlier this week.

A head-on collision on a rain-slicked highway on Monday killed one person and sent another to the hospital after a vehicle crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming pickup truck, which left the roadway and caught fire.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:25 p.m. Monday on State Highway 69 near Hillcrest Lane, just north of Batesville.

According to the Arkansas State Police, a northbound 2004 Ford lost control on the wet roadway, crossed the centerline, and struck a southbound 2024 Dodge Ram. The impact sent the Dodge Ram off the road, where it caught fire.

The driver of the Dodge Ram was pronounced dead at the scene. As of May 21, 2026, at 11 a.m., the report noted that the victim had not been identified by authorities and that next of kin had not been notified. His body was transported to Willis Funeral Home.

The driver of the Ford, Nathan Cole Woodall, 22, of Melbourne, was injured in the crash and transported to White River Medical Center. The extent of his injuries was not immediately available.

Rain was falling, and the road was wet at the time of the collision, according to the report.

The accident left both lanes of Highway 69 blocked for several hours before the road reopened.
