An assistant coach who helped guide Lyon College baseball to its first conference semifinal appearance is taking over the program.

Athletic Director Kevin Jenkins announced Wednesday that David Butterfield has been promoted to head baseball coach.

“David has been an integral part of our baseball program for the past two years and has demonstrated a tremendous commitment to the success of our student-athletes both on and off the field,” Jenkins said. “His knowledge of the game, recruiting ability, and leadership within the program made him the clear choice to lead Lyon Baseball into its next chapter.”

During his two seasons as an assistant coach, Butterfield helped the Scots to a 49-35 overall record, including 26 victories in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Under his watch, Lyon made its first semifinal appearance in the SLIAC tournament.

Butterfield also oversaw the development of 11 SLIAC all-conference selections, two USCAA All-Americans, and 12 USCAA all-academic team members.

“I am excited to step into this new role,” Butterfield said. “Lyon has a strong tradition, outstanding people, and a community that cares deeply about developing student-athletes both on and off the field. Our goal will continue to be to develop young men who compete with passion, represent Lyon College the right way, and pursue success.”

Before coming to Lyon, Butterfield was a teacher and coach at Clarksville Christian School. He played infielder for five seasons at Harding University, where he later served as a graduate assistant coach.

A Smyrna, Tennessee, native, Butterfield holds a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in kinesiology and sports management from Harding. He lives in Batesville with his wife, Tyler, and their daughters, Ella and Maylee.
