Stone County is one step closer to a major shift in its educational landscape after the Quorum Court moved Monday night to seat new leadership for two emerging school districts.

County Judge Stacey Avey swore in five newly appointed board members each for the Timbo and Rural Special school districts. The appointments come as those campuses prepare to separate from the Mountain View School District to become three independent entities on July 1.

Under Arkansas law, the quorum court holds the authority to appoint these board members due to the unique nature of the district reorganization. Avey noted the rarity of the move, marking only the second time in 26 years that the court has had to appoint school board members during his tenure.

Avey said the transition is focused on providing the best educational opportunities while maintaining community relationships.

The Rural Special board includes Renee Carr, Dustin Stewart, Daniel Morrison, Trilla Kennedy, and Roger Hipp. The Timbo board consists of Melissa Sutton, Ilse Jordan, Karen Ross, Jonathan Schrock, and Brenda Lewis.

Rural Special and Mountain View have meetings scheduled for March 17, while the Timbo board will meet April 6.
