If your phone rings and the caller claims you owe money for a warrant or court summons, hang up.
The Independence County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers demand immediate payment to settle supposed warrants, fees, or missed court appearances.
In a statement issued Friday, officials said the calls are fraudulent and designed to pressure residents into sending money or sharing sensitive information.
The department said it will never call to collect fees or demand payment over the phone.
Residents are urged not to provide financial information or personal identifiers, including dates of birth or Social Security numbers, to anyone making such claims.
Anyone with questions or who needs assistance is encouraged to contact the Independence County Sheriff’s Department directly at 870-793-8838.
