Authorities urge caution following string of grass fires in Independence County

Firefighters are battling a string of grass fires across Independence County on Monday as “high” fire danger ratings and strict burn bans remain in place across northern Arkansas.

Emergency crews have been on the scene of a major grass fire near the 1300 block of Bethesda Road, also known as State Highway 106. Authorities warned motorists to use extreme caution, as heavy smoke from the blaze has significantly reduced visibility on the highway.

The Bethesda Road fire is just one of several incidents stretching local resources. Officials reported another fire further down the highway near Harkey Road, where a utility pole reportedly caught fire. Meanwhile, scanner traffic indicated a third grass fire in the Southside area.

The surge in activity follows a weekend of increased fire reports across the region. While the majority of Arkansas is under a moderate fire alert, the northern tier of the state remains at “high” risk.

Burn bans issued Sunday for Independence, Fulton, Izard, Jackson, and Sharp counties remain in effect. Local officials say the bans are critical to preventing new ignitions as dry conditions persist. No injuries or structural damage have been confirmed at this time.

UPDATE: 12:30 p.m.: Cushman and Ruddell Hill fire departments responded to a fully engulfed trailer fire on Claxton Loop Road. According to inital  reports, all occupants had evacuated the structure before crews arrived.
